DIY chopping board from leftover ash wood

8.8.13

When installing a new kitchen worktop made out of ash wood I ended up with some very nice sized leftover peaces. Instead of just throwing them out i kept them, I knew i could use them for something later one. The other day I had some spare time and thought it could be nice with a new chopping board for the kitchen.

So down in the basement and crank up that saw, let there be sawdust!

Ash wood leftovers.
With the circular saw all four sides where sawn for nice and even edges.

Drawing out the handle.

Cutting out the handle with a jigsaw.
Don't forget sanding the entire board on all sides and edges to prevent sharp edges.

Drilling hole for a cord.

Border for the handle painting.

Painting the handle. I gave the handle to coats of paint.

Red color for the handle.

Oiling the board. Olive oil used for cooking is just fine and prevents the wood from drying out.

After oiling, drying outside in the sun.
The final result, with a cord for hanging.

The entire project took about 2 - 3 hours to make, and most of the time I was waiting for the paint and oil to dry.

Remember from time to time to give your chopping board a new coat of oil. This prevents the wood from drying out when washing the board. And never ever put your chopping board in the dishwasher ;-)
